Questions People Ask

Do I Need Therapy or Just a Break?

Sometimes a long weekend fixes it. Sometimes you come back from vacation just as tired as you left. Here is how to tell the difference, and what to do if rest is not enough.

When a Break Is Probably Enough

Everyone hits stretches of stress: a big project, a hard semester, a few weeks of bad sleep. When the stress has a clear cause and a clear end, rest usually helps. You take a few days off, sleep in, see friends, and you come back feeling more like yourself. Good signs that a break may be what you need:

  • You feel noticeably better after a weekend or a few days off.
  • You can still enjoy the things you usually enjoy.
  • Your sleep and appetite bounce back when the pressure lifts.
  • The stress is tied to something specific with an end date.

Signs It May Be More Than Tired

Rest stops working when the problem is not just a full calendar. If you notice several of these, especially for more than a couple of weeks, it may be time to talk to someone:

  • You come back from time off feeling just as drained.
  • Things you used to enjoy feel flat or pointless.
  • Sleep is off: too much, too little, or restless no matter what.
  • You are irritable, tearful or numb more often than not.
  • People close to you have said you do not seem like yourself.
  • You are leaning on alcohol, scrolling or overworking to avoid feeling things.

Burnout, Depression or Both?

Burnout and depression overlap, and one can slide into the other. Burnout is usually tied to a specific load, like work or caregiving, and tends to ease when that load lightens. Depression often spreads into everything, including the parts of life that should feel good. Anxiety can hide under exhaustion too, keeping your body on high alert even when you try to rest.

You do not need to figure out which one you have before reaching out. Sorting that out is part of what counseling is for. My page on stress and burnout explains how I approach overload, and signs of high-functioning depression covers what depression can look like when you are still getting everything done.

If rest is not restoring you anymore, that is not weakness. It is information worth listening to.

You Do Not Need a Crisis to Deserve Support

A lot of people wait until they are falling apart to ask for help. They worry their problems are not serious enough, or that someone else needs it more. But counseling is not only for emergencies. It can be proactive: a way to deal with stress before it becomes a breaking point, and to build habits that protect you going forward.

If you are not sure, that uncertainty is a perfectly good reason for a conversation.

What a Free Consultation Can Clarify

A free consultation is about fifteen minutes by phone or video, with no charge and no obligation. You describe what has been going on, and I tell you honestly whether I think counseling would help and whether I am the right fit. If I am not, I will point you somewhere better.

Online booking is on its way. For now, the message form on Work With Me is the way in, and replies with times usually come within one to two business days. My page on what happens in a free consultation walks through the call step by step.

Common Questions

How long should I wait to see if a break helps?
If you have had real time off and still feel drained, flat or on edge, there is no need to wait longer. As a rough guide, feelings that last more than a couple of weeks, or keep coming back, are worth talking about.
Can counseling help with burnout if I cannot change my job?
Yes. We can work on how you carry the load: boundaries, recovery time, the beliefs that keep you overextended, and small changes within your control. Sometimes bigger decisions come up later, and we can think those through together too.
What if I start counseling and it turns out I just needed rest?
Then we will have figured that out together, which is useful in itself. Some people need only a few sessions to get back on track. There are no packages to commit to, so you are never locked into ongoing counseling.
